Tip, total and everyone’s share

Splitting a restaurant bill is simple arithmetic that is easy to get wrong after dinner. This calculator takes the bill, the tip rate and the number of people and gives you four numbers: the tip, the total, the tip per person and what each person pays. The comparison table underneath shows the same bill at other common rates, so you can see what moving from 15% to 20% actually costs.

The formulas

  • Tip base = bill, or bill − tax when tipping on the pre-tax amount
  • Tip = tip base × rate ÷ 100
  • Total = bill + tip
  • Each share = total ÷ people

With a tax percent, the tax inside a bill is bill − bill ÷ (1 + rate ÷ 100), so a 110 bill with 10% tax contains 10 of tax and 100 before tax. Rounding up adds to the tip rather than the bill, which is how most people round in practice.

Frequently asked questions

How much should I tip?
Customs vary by country. In the United States 15% to 20% is usual in sit-down restaurants, with 18% to 20% common for good service. In the UK a 10% to 12.5% service charge is often already on the bill. In much of Europe rounding up is normal, and in Japan tipping is generally not expected. Check the bill for an included service charge before adding a tip.
Should I tip on the amount before or after tax?
Etiquette guides usually suggest tipping on the pre-tax amount, since tax is not part of the service. Many people tip on the total for simplicity, and the difference is small. Enter the tax in the Tax section and tick Tip on pre-tax amount to calculate it the first way.
How does rounding work when splitting a bill?
Round total takes the total including tip up to the next whole unit. Round each share takes every person's share up to the next whole unit, which is handy when everyone pays separately in cash. The extra goes to the tip, and the card under Total shows how much rounding added.
Why do the per-person amounts not have fractions of a cent?
All amounts are calculated in whole cents, or whole yen for yen, so they match what you can actually pay. When a total does not divide evenly, the result card shows how many people pay one cent more, so the shares add up to the exact total. Choose Each share under Round up if you would rather everyone pays the same whole amount.
How is the tip calculated?
The tip is the base multiplied by the rate, where the base is the bill, or the bill minus tax when tipping on the pre-tax amount. The total is the bill plus the tip, and each share is the total divided by the number of people. The line under the results shows the exact sums.
Is my bill stored anywhere?
No. Everything is calculated in your browser. Your last entry is remembered on this device so the page reopens where you left off. Copy link builds a link containing it, which you can share if you choose.
